: ] There is a whole lot to gain. The religious war derives from whether
: ] the benefits should have been derived from the old SunOS 4 based kernel
: ] or through first switching to SVR4.

AT&T System V Release 4 was going to be released no mater what. AT&T
sub-contracted Sun to help work on SVR4. SVR4 which was to be the
final coming together of all UNIX's, BSD, SYSV, SunOS 4.x & Xenix. Forget
that OSF was formed and that it was so great that IBM went back to its AIX
as if it never heard of OSF/1 not to mention HP. Digital, well...

After AT&T & Sun have completed the work, Sun is suppose turn around and
then derive their new OS from SunOS 4.1.x????

Am I missing something here? So Sun takes SVR4 and adds on its own
SMP, UI threads, SunOS 4.1.x binary compatability etc. and names it
Solaris 2.0.

The only problem I see is:

1. Solaris 2.0 was very buggy as was the next few releases which gave
Solaris a bad name, and allowed SunOS 4.1.x people to say what are
   you doing.

2. Sun thought they could move their installed base of SunOS 4.1.x to
Solaris 2.0 by force without helping them in the transition.

Scott McNealy (sp?) has already admitted that they screwed here.

So now where are we? SunOS 4.1.4 is not supported on UltraSparc and
will never be. SunOS 4.1.4 is/should be the last release with no new
development. 4.4 BSD is the last version of BSD to ship and UCB pulls
the plug on funding for the development staff citing lack of need
with the availability of popular UNIX alternatives.

Solaris has since become stable with 2.4, getting rid of problem #1, and
with 2.5 speed improvements as well as even greater stabiltiy can be seen.
SunOS 4.1.x binaries will run on Solaris 2.x. Sun now has a very good
SunOS 4.1.x to Solaris 2.x migration program and has funded a program
to move popular software to Solaris 2.x. That takes care of #2.
And if that's not enought Sun has finally embraced Motif and ships
CDE 1.0.1 with Soalris 2.5. Not to mention the new SunSoft's Visual
Workshop for C++ 2.0 is now Motif based.

Solaris 2.6 is already in the works and life goes on.
