I have a new Diamond 8X cdrom which uses it's own EIDE controller. I
compiled the kernel with the ATAPI options, did MAKEDEV wcd0, and
   mount_cd9660 /dev/wcd0c /cdrom. I get a "device not configured
message". When I boot I get the correct probe for 'wdc1 found at 0x170
at irq 15' message, however it hangs there a long time and the cdrom
   light does not come on.

Are you using Serge's ATAPI driver? I am not a FreeBSD user, but I
have been looking at the driver I found in the FreeBSD source
tree. The driver only seems to support the audio functions. Support
for mounting the CD-ROM was being worked on, but there were some
technical problems that had to be solved. I don't know how far this
driver has progressed since I got it (back in December).
