(previously a 1542). I recently bought a soundblaster card (Vibra16 based with three CD interfaces) to use on the system. I built a kernel following the sound.doc and using LINT config gile as an example and checking I have no IRQ conflicts. I use high and low DMA. I also tried a PAS16 Studio with the same result. Basically, I boot the kernel from a 4GB drive on the 2840, I see the 2840 sense the devices on the bus, I see the sound devices configure and can start Xwindows. I have no problems with the system which has a lot of network activity UNTIL I try to play a sound. I have made sure I have MAKEDEV sb or pas16 and when run xanim on a .mov or .avi file I see the image start and hear the FIRST few bars of the sound or music and then the system hangs. This sometimes just freezes and I have to press reset OR it reboots the PC from scratch. MOST times I have to use the fixit floppy to fix the root partition which gets screwed (eg some pty devices files die and some package DESC+ files get deleted and SOMETIMES the root file system home block gets corrupted) AND also sometimes the .mov file (in another filesystem) which was only being read AND it's directory gets creamed as well. This means every iteration of testing the sound card(s) I have to fix up or restore my filesystem(s)! I don't know why the .mov file gets written when it's playing. I booted dos and used the manufacturers utils for the soundcards and all works fine. (other system devices like 2840 would have been idle) I am thinking that there may be an issue with voxware and the new aic777x driver over DMA or some other resources. My next test is to replace the AHA1540 and see if that works with the sound cards. I would appreciate hearing from anyone successfully running with an SB16 or PAS16 Spectrun/studio who uses an Adaptec 2840 and if possible a look at sound_config.h and CONFIG files. If anyone else is having the same problem, I would also like to hear (mainly to save my sanity!) and if you have a solution. Many thanks. Phil Sampson Sydney Australia sampson@redbck.stl.dec.com
