Okay. Nick: you're a maniac!

I highly recommend version 2 of fvwm. (Not the 1.X version in ports.)
fvwm2 gives you lots of virtual windows, has builtin sound support for
rplay, and provides you will a really nice toolbar facility that not
only launches applications, but manages and organized their display.

As an example, the toolbar on my workstation includes an integrated
sound mixer control panel, xload graph, clock, and diskspace monitor.
These are all standalone X applications whose output is "swallowed"
by the toolbar such that they display their output inside of it. By
making the toolbar "sticky" it follows me around as I switch between
virtual desktops. Very useful.

fvwm2 does take some work to set up, but it's well worth the effort.
