you need at laest one master on each controller (primary or secondary)
- or no disk at all :-) - and the second disk on each must be the
slave - so for you two ways are possible:
primary: disk (master), cdrom (slave)
secondary: empty
this worked for me in two configs - or
primary: disk (master)
secondary: cdrom (master)
this i'll test next week (then i get the machine under my fingers
again)
but - maybe your cdrom is broken - if it responses as a tape-drive
you may try to set "case AT_TYPE_TAPE:" instead of "case
AT_TYPE_CDROM:" in /sys/i386/isa/atapi.c and recompile the kernel
(don't forget the 'device wcd0' and 'options "ATAPI"' entries) if all
above things fail
