I do not have CDROM, so I used the 2.0.1-RELEASE version and made those floppies: boot.flp, fixit.flp, atapi.flp, and root.flp in their images on 1.2m floppies. I used boot.flp floppy to install freebsd kernel, then I got nowhere except keep on rebooting automatically by using boot floppy. Here is the massage before automatic rebooting: Fatal trap12: page fault while in kernel mode fault virtual address =0x0 fault code =supervisor read, page not present instruction pointer = 0x8:f018c82d code segment = base0x0, limit 0xfffff, type 0x1b = DPL0, pres1, def32 1, gran 1 processor efdags = interrupt enabled, resume, IOPL=0 current process = 1 (swapper) interrupt mask = net tty bio panic = page fault syncing disk ... done automatic reboot in 15 seconds ------ I never see the "installation menu" show up!! The problem cant not be solved by me. I try to use fd(0,a)/kernel -c at the boot: prompt to see the "virtual" setup utility, still I can not see how am I going to solve the "page fault " problem. Can J. K. H. help me or any one who has encountered such a problem giving me a hand? By the way, to Jordan: "Assumption is the mother of all fuck-up" I think your installation guide is good but has too many assumptions: Assume people will use CDROM - I don't have CDROM driver! Assume people will know how to make binary image floppies. Assume people know where and when to use what floppies - I don't know what the root.flp for and when to use it! Your "3.0 Installing FreeBSD" section does not have much info for installation but comments. However, I like the way you wrote your "Installation Notes for Release 1.0 FreeBSD". It is complete and very helpful, and I used it to install my FreeBSD 1.0 successfully. But this Guide for 2.0 leaves me no room to get around my problem due to the "self-installation" and the assumption of some "default" stuff! Dr. Boris Chang
