I won't defend the print spooler (of course, SunOS 4 had a truly primitive
print implementation that you really had to hack to get to do something
out-of-the-ordinary). The SAF really is very powerful, albeit with an
awful command-line structure (but surely SunOS 4 fans find that appealing!).
The rc.? "crap", inittab and run-levels are far superior to the SunOS 4
rivals, though they may seem a little to well distributed for easy admin
by some. How can the -plumb argument (open interface device and setup
the STREAMs required) really be a serious cause to dislike Solaris 2?

: Well not the arguments from me. Rather than fix something that was

: fixed. This is the biggest complaint I have about Solaris: there's a
: lot of pain for no real gain - apart from the artificial benefit of
: getting an OS for the latest Sun kit that Sun won't let run SunOS.

There is a whole lot to gain. The religious war derives from whether
the benefits should have been derived from the old SunOS 4 based kernel
or through first switching to SVR4.
