Geometry Date: 17 Jan 1996 06:12:37 GMT Organization: Concentric Internet Services Lines: 57 Message-ID: <4di40l$9g1@spectator.cris.com> NNTP-Posting-Host: voyager-fddi.cris.com X-Newsreader: TIN [version 1.2 PL2] Although I feel like i'm an adolescent again, asking Dad for help with troublesome math homework, the truth is that I really do need some help with disk geometry. Despite many months of lurking here and reading the assorted faqs, buying books, etc., now that the time has arrived to configure some new SCSI arrays, I'm stuck with the unrelenting message about incorrect disk geometry. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated... Drives in array #1: ------------------- Hitachi DK516C-16 Total Capacity: 1,342 MB Capacity per Track: 41,472 Bytes Capacity per Sector: 512 Bytes (figures are for formatted capacity) Sectors per Track: 81 [note 1] Disks: 8 Data Heads: 15 Servo Heads: 1 Cylinders: 2172 + 7 [note 2] Note 1: There are 8 Default Alternate Sectors. They are assigned in the last 8 sectors on the 15th head. Note 2: There are 7 cylinders (1 for CE cylinder, 2 for alternate track, 3 for controller management area, 1 for ESDI data defect area) which are not accessible to the user. The documentation also says that the following may work for SUN workstations: 2170 Cylinders 81 Sectors per Track 15 Heads Drive Array #2 -------------- Formatted Capacity: 1355 RPM: 4002 Heads: 19 Bytes/Track (KB): 42.8 Bytes/Surface (MB): 82.9 Tracks/Surface: 1962 Recording Mode: 1,7 (These are H.P. #97560 SCSI-II drives) Both sets of drives are being driven by Buslogic BT-445C controllers, (bt0 in each machine), FreeBSD 2.0.5. The Buslogic "Support for >1 Gig (DOS)" option is turned off...hopefully to prevent translation. Any help, answers, flames (yeah, anything!) would be welcome. I'd really like to learn how to figure this out once and for all <g>! Thanks... Damien
