Well, note that if you use ODS, you can do the following:

1) add a mirror to an existing metadisk.
2) wait for them to synchronize
3) detach the original metadisk from the mirror
4) continue using the mirror as the new disk...

and the users will never know that anything is going on.

You can use the same stunt to do backups without disturbing the users...
