I saw it, and I bit. Today I picked up a copy of the Walnut Creek CD ROM kit, version 2.1. However, I haven't yet cracked the plastic blister. Shrink wrapped packages can still be returned. :) Before I commit further, I downloaded all the FreeBSD articles I could find in USENET to see if my setup will work with FreeBSD (yes, I read the box, but the box doesn't tell you everything). Current setup: AMD 486DX4-100 on an ASUS VLB momboard 16 megs of non-partity RAM (one simm) ATI MACH 32 (OEM) Vision (QDI) VLB EIDE controller First HD, Seagate 545 (IDE) Second HD, Seagate 428 (IDE) SoundBlaster 16 on IRQ 5 Matsushita quad speed ATAPI CD ROM plugged into the SB using IRQ 10 for I/O No-name Serial Mouse on COMM 1 USR Sportster (internal) on COMM 2 HD's Formated as follows: First HD C primary with WIN95 and DOS 6.2 and WIN 3.1 extendeded partition with D and E drives, plus a boot manager partition running OS/2 Warp on FAT Second HD extended partition with drives F thru J (J is currently HPFS, everything else is FAT) J is currently a 128 meg drive and that is where I'd planned to install FreeBSD. The box told me that a basic install was 60 megs. I'm sure I'll need more space with a TCP/IP suite. Some questions: - Can I still boot with OS/2's boot manager and choose to boot FreeBSD from J? - Can I move FreeBSD's swap file to a non-UNIX partition if I need more space in that drive? ( I said I was a newbie. :-) ) - Just how much space will I need to run FreeBSD with a TCP/IP setup? - Being a UNIX dummy, I'm I biting off more than I can chew with FreeBSD? I do have Lurnix's "UNIX Made Easy," (1,004 pages!) to fall back on. Steve Ames sames@magi.com
