I guess I'm not sure what you're getting at here. *All* the benefits of Solaris 2.x or AIX or <name your system here> could be fitted into SunOS 4.x or <name other system here> with enough work. Has this really degenerating into arguing the theoretical possibility of bettering SunOS 4.x? For the sake of absurdity, let me claim that I could start with Win95 and retrofit all the features of Solaris. I'd rather start with Solaris and expend my effort enhancing it beyond its current state. Perhaps Sun felt that retrofitting all the SVR4 bits they wanted into SunOS 4.x wouldn't have been as productive as starting with a real live SVR4 code base. No, I don't want to argue that point either way, so don't try it :-) Perhaps we could avoid future snipes about "could have been added to SunOS 4.x" and concentrate on the products as they currently exist? -- Robert
