Thanks.  I got a number of replies about this.  The most important point (for
me :( ) was that you absolutely need the latest version of mh (6.8.3).

There is a config suggestion at
   ftp://ftp.netbsd.org/pub/NetBSD/packages/src/mh-config.tar.gz
which is helpful too.
