It's generally easier to setup, and it has better support for things
such as compression and PAP/CHAP, and it has support for on-demand
dialing.  However, the kernel mode stuff (pppd) uses less resources and
is generally more stable.

FWIW, I used 'ppp' for awhile locally, but I switched to pppd when I
couldn't get the link to stay up.  It was a little more work to setup,
but I've been happy with it ever since.
