Do not install from CDROM.

I had trouble with the installation ATAPI-boot floppy too. I installed 
FreeBSD 2.1 from a DOS-partition, and configured the ATAPI driver into
the kernel afterwards. This works fine for me: I can use my IDE CDROM. 

I hope this will work for you too.
