My first reply reached me within hours of my original post! Most people recommended the book by Nemeth (as do the FreeBSD people), but unfortunately the price is way too high - $AUS106 (which is about $US80), so I might go for some of the others recommended instead. Incidentlally, a large portion of the 4.4 BSD System Manager's Manual seems to be online at http://www.eecs.nwu.edu/bsd, together with the users and programmers supplementary manuals. Also of interest to newbies (like me) might be a unix tutorial at http://www.Unixhelp.ed.ac.uk/TOP_.html and the Unix FAQ web pages.. but I can't remember their address right now :( Thanks again, Alan.
