MacCurdy" <maccurdy@deltanet.com> Newsgroups: comp.unix.bsd.bsdi.misc Subject: BSDI passwords trashed -- suggestions? Date: 26 Jan 1996 00:50:31 GMT Organization: Cogito Development Lines: 19 Message-ID: <4e98go$qn3@news2.deltanet.com> NNTP-Posting-Host: vny0134.deltanet.com Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Mailer: Mozilla 1.22 (Windows; I; 32bit) On several occasions, I've added users to my BSDI/2.0 box with the adduser utility only to find the master.passwd file trashed afterwards. In such an event, the file contains blank password fields for most users (including root), allowing unrestricted logins. Possibly unrelated to this, the machine will also not allow users to change their password using the passwd utility; it gives the message "Password changed elsewhere, no changes made." Please email and post replies. I will be grateful if someone can make a suggestion here; BSDI refers me to the sales department to purchase a support contract before they will answer the question. -- James R. MacCurdy
