It's more than that.  The first question to ask is "which motherboards?".

ALR, Compaq, Intel, Micronics, etcetera all use slightly different approaches
to multi-processing - on some models it is true SMP and on others not.

SCO and Corollary have made a fair amount of money and have done a lot of
work to work on a lot of diverse hardware.  Windows NT requires separate
HAL driver for different multi-processor Intel systems.
