Don't blame the core team for everything. We are incidentally also doing technical work, but that's mostly not the purpose of the core team. (The purpose is rather to provide the required organizational structure to keep the project running.) OTOH, the number of people actively contributing to FreeBSD is much bigger. I notice that people are often confusing this... In your case, Joe Diehl once went out to revamp the ft driver, but sorry, i haven't heard anything from him for a rather long time.
