Hi!

I've just taken delivery of a new Acer Altos 7000V Pentium system with 128M
RAM, 4GB disk, Sony DAT and Matsushita quad-speed CDROM. All of the above
devices are connected to an integral Adaptec AIC7870 controller which sits on
the PCI bus (not the RAM, of course.. <grin>). There is also an SMC ethernet
card on the PCI bus.

Booting from the FreeBSD 2.1.0-RELEASE stiffy and installing via NFS went
without a hitch. Booting from sd0a after the installation is where my trouble
started. The bus probe went fine right up to the point where it was supposed
to probe the PCI bus. It didn't. Just paniced about not being able to mount
the root partition and gave me a message about rebooting in 15 seconds. A reboot
from the stiffy probed the PCI bus just fine, detecting all devices without
hesitation. Going back to sd0a boot, problem recurs.

Now, I have another machine which has its video controller on the PCI bus but
uses an IDE drive. The probe of the PCI bus and devices is not a problem. I'm
really at a loss as to what the cause of this behaviour could be.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I don't particularly want to disable the
AIC7870 and install an EISA controller - that would not go down well with the
bean-counters..

Thanks in advance.
- Sean.
