I have DEC VT420 dumb terminal and login over modem line in BSDI BSD/386 1.1.
The terminal can display national characters through loadable fonts.
The terminal has some keys which generate esc-sequences and are suitable
for switching between different fonts.

The question is :
How can I translate character to the high half of character table after
pressing a switch key ? How can I define a switch key sequence ?

Any information/reference would be appreciated.
