There were eight major differences between the two that I considered when choosing FreeBSD or Linux. 1) FreeBSD is secure, Linux is not. (Linux has way too many suid programs) 2) If you run INN, FreeBSD is the way to go. 3) FreeBSD has faster networking than Linux. 4) Linux has better screen and keyboard features. 5) Linux makes a better web server. (Apache seemed "snappier" on Linux) 6) FreeBSD is "brain dead" simple to set-up. (Linux took a year to set-up, FreeBSD about an hour) 7) Linux has better device support. 8) Linux is more fun to use. (Better games, more cool apps) These are opinions based on trial and error and not any factual analysis. Your mileage may vary. For my system, I use Linux, FreeBSD, and NT Server for different jobs. As far as stability is concerned, neither my FreeBSD nor my Linux machine has ever crashed. Although the NT Server crashes periodically!
