I still have the above boot problem, but:

I figured this out.  I found the psm driver in the kernel, and then later
(after shuting down FreeBSD, booting Windows 95, to use Netscape) found
the the discusion of this problem in the FAQ - i.e., yes I had to build
a new kernel...

But, I still haven't found anything on my boot problem, so if anyone
could shed some light, I'd appreceated it.
