Just how do you set a netmask with the userland ppp under 2.1.0?

I need a netmask of 255.255.255.240 on my PPP link, but whatever I
do I can't seem to set it in ppp (both my client and host systems
are FreeBSD machines). The default netmask of 255.255.255.0 is always
set; the documentation does not seem to say how to set it to something else.

I can set it with an ifconfig command on both sides after setting up the link,
but I suspect that the incorrect initial netmask may be what is causing my
routing to mess up - the host's routed is not advertising the route to the
client's network correctly and spurious routes are appearing (even if
I kill and restart the routed's after the ifconfig commands).

Can anyone help? This routing stuff is driving me crazy.
