Kermit is still free, but the Kermit folks have seriously constrained it's availability. Their policy was much more relaxed before. I learned all this when I hunted for Kermit on the Linux distribution and couldn't find it and so ftp'd to their internet site: watson.cc.columbia.edu It's too bad, because until you get your Linux or FreeBSD machine hooked up to a network and thus can use tools like ftp to transfer files - you're pretty much cut off from the outside world.
