The ports collection has a port of xxgdb. The port files are only 
a few files. Properly installed a simple make does everything for 
you (ftp'ing the source, patches it, ...). make install installs.

The new pgcc (pentium optimized gcc) is also available in the FreeBSD 
ports collection. 

If you want to use another version, go the recommended way:
	configure --prefix=/usr/local i386-unknown-freebsd
or whatever target is possible...
After that do a make bootstrap and go and drink some coffees.
