There is some discussion of modifying the "class" fields to conform to recent BSDI usage. If you want to code this up rather than using the comp.unix.sources programs, feel free. I still can't figure out your claims about "DOS does this nicely"; I think you must be running seperate programs, like NetWare, which are not part of DOS (like the archives programs are not technically part of UNIX or UNIX-clonce OS's).
