This is a very common problem all over the net on busy machines running
sendmail. Yours is over a 28.8 SLIP dialup, so it is even more likely to
happen. Sendmail will of course retry for a while before it gives up.
Are you sure you weren't just logging the mail syslog messages to a file,
and not noticing the timeouts ( under 1.x.y ) ? I've never seen a machine
running sendmail that didn't get these messages from time to time. It is like
having the fetching of a web page fail, surely you've had this happen to you?
