Firstly, I am a member of the FreeBSD core team, and have worked
on supporting mission critical OS/CPU combinations. It is an ungodly
mistake to use Linux, FreeBSD or BSDI in such an application. Those OSes
currently don't support multiple/redundant CPU/Memory/I-O subsystems,
for example. My customers paid big bucks for support and got it. Much
of the time, major bugs were fixed within a few hours. At least one
of us had to carry a pager 24/7. Our entire function was to address and
solve customers problems ASAP (including their software errors.) It is
amazing that people don't know about services like that being available.
This quality of service costs more than $200/year :-).

The blame comment above appears to be cynical. Please refer to my comment
above. The customers paid for the support that they got. These machines
were (among other things) billing computers for long distance and local
phone service. Lots of $$$ lost during downtime. The same machines were
also used in LARGE financial institutions for their accounting.

You CAN get it for many commercial OSes, and you'll have to pay about
1yr loaded developer's salary for it. If you can't get it, then you had
better buy good support or don't buy it, given you have a mission
critical application.

Please define "real market", and speaking of "flame bait", I think that
your posting is causing the problem that you accuse others of. Why
make negative comments putting people down? There is plenty of room
in the market for competition. Jordan not only has vision, he is also
a realist and won't misrepresent FreeBSD just to get a sale. It is that
bothersome ethics thing, you know. :-).
