Here is my problem: I have a FreeBSD 2.1-RELEASE system with a USR Sportster 33.6Kbps modem on COM2. I would like to be able to dial in to this modem and get a login prompt so I can get shell access. I went through the Handbook (Section 10.4 I believe...) and edited 'ttys' and 'gettystab' as described. I set the modem's DIP switches 3, 4, and 5 to diasable result codes, disable local echo, and enable auto answer as was stated. When I dialed in with a 2400 Zoom modem (it's all I had hanging around) I got a 2400 connect and then a string of garbage. (Or perhaps it was x's and >'s ;I tried so many different combinations I can't remember - if it is important let me know and I'll check) I set the tty to std.2400, d2400, v19200, and even entered the v.34 section and set it to VH57600 but got similar results - just junk instead of a login prompt. I had a friend try with his 14.4 and the above options but we got the same results. The handbook says that in variable mode situations, users may get garbage and will need to keep hitting <enter> to get it to cycle speeds but even that produced nothing usable. I'm sure I'm making an obvious oversight so if someone could point it out to me I would greatly appreciate it. I am at a loss for what else to try. If all else fails I will try another modem if I can get my hands on one.... Please e-mail me if you have any suggestions. Thanks again!! -Dave
