I changed Ethernet cards and everything works just fine !???!?!?

I WAS trying to use an Intel EtherExpress Pro/10, and the above problems were
encountered. I changed to a 3Com 509B TPO, and I no longer have the above
problems. You DO have to set the card to "no Plug-and-Play", though, but
that is easy to do.

I DID, however, discover that the installation documenation recommendations
for /usr/src, and /usr/X11R6 sizes were too small.
