On the install cd-rom it does state that a alpha version of the code for ide cd-rom is available. I tried to install FreeBSD with the hardware as shipped by Gateway, but the CD-ROM drive was not found. Then I tried to install from a DOS partition but got some write errors(wierd), I also tried a network installed but could not connect to ftp.freebsd.org(I guess it was too busy). Finally, decided to get dirty and take the covers off and move the drives around. And then Whammo. Everything started working just great. :-).
