Of course :), it doesn't work.

(I've made both experiences myself, too.  The hard way, first the
blank screen, but i've swapped the Mach for an TVGA9000 to install,
and then XFree86 3.1.2 didn't work.  Geeee.)

The recent betas of XFree86 3.1.2 do work however.  Since you can now
get beta servers officially in public, this will be an option for you.
They still have an expiration date to force you not using beta
software for too long, but you could get it going though.
