I can vouch for the above method.  A friend of mine has done the same thing,
and as wierd as it might sound, it does work and from what I have seen, it is
fast.  I personally would have never thought of connecting the CDROM to the
primary HD controller, but hey if it works, I don't care :).
BTW it only works for IDE CDROMS.  If you have the funky Sony I/F and/or some
other non IDE cable device, your out of luck.
