Subject: What is this "log db: Permission denied." error message?

I try to avoid logging in as root, so I open an account for myself.
When I don't log in as root and try to edit a simple file
(e.g. .login) using vi, I get the following error message:

log db: Permission denied.

I check the permissions of vi and it shows -r-xr-xr-x, so it should be
runnable by everyone. Anyone has any ideas? Thanks in advance.
