Hi there,

I had the fun of installing FreeBSD-2.1-RELEASE on a machine yesterday
for a friend who's know taking his first steps with any kind of Unix
operating system on his private machine (just for the records: it's a
486DX4-100, 20 meg RAM, 3 x about 1 GB hard disk (IDE) and a Mitsumi
FX400D ATAPI CD-ROM drive connected to the primary IDE adapter as the
slave device.)

One thing was, that I wanted a separate root partition on the first
drive (because the 2nd drive should be unused and all the other files
should reside on the 3rd drive) so I had to add a partition for
FreeBSD on it. We used some file system optimizer (as long as we can
speak about a file system when talking about DOS/Windows) to clear up
the space at the end of the drive and used FIPS to resize the W95
partition - this worked fine! W95 came up and didn't say anything
about it. As I used FIPS on my own DOS machine without problems, too,
I want to express that this is a very fine tool. Of course, we made
backups before, but in this way we just don't need to restore them.

Unfortunately the ATAPI.FLP from the FreeBSD CD didn't work, so I
decided to plug in :-) a network adapter and installed FreeBSD over
NFS - with selecting all the about 25 or 30 packages I wanted, this
was really a pleasure to me, because the machine next to me did its
work and I had the time to upgrade my own FreeBSD to 2.1 at the same
time :-)

I compiled a new kernel when the machine was ready to run and tried
also the ATAPI drivers - it worked without problems and all the time
flawlessly.

But I have a question: I made a

		mkdir /usr/ports
		cd /cdrom/ports
		tar cXf . distfiles - | (cd /usr/ports ; tar xvf -)

Believe me, that CD-ROM drive didn't get happy about the steady
repositioning of its lense, and transferring those bag full of small
files was sloooow... Is this improved in -CURRENT ?

Bye,
    Martin
