This also can happen after FTPing the dists to your c:\. It happened to 
me (also with a quantum hd ?!!). It is not the CD.

Have you tried the FTP install ? (Not practical without a fast 
connection).  

Have you used FIPS anytime ? Don't, or risk serious fs corruption if you 
ever try to mount DOS in freeBSD.
