You need to get yourself customized kernel - the GENERIC
one you most probably run is not what you want.
Take a look at /sys/i386/conf/LINT - it's pretty easy
to see what you have to change ( pty , maxusers, get
rid of the devices you don;t need).
Don't forget:
to make a copy of /kernel before installing new one
to /dev/MAKEDEV ptyN
