Rob,

XFree86 supports the Hercules MonoChrome adaptor as part of
(as I recall) the Mono video driver distribution. 

If this is one of their color cards, then look at it's
docs to see what, if any, other cards it emulates and
select that as as the driver that you 'ln -s X' in 
the install of X-Free.
