Does the console have any messages (serial overflows, etc...)? If not, it might be something as simple as a noisy line, or an overloaded server on his end. If it works 'most of the time', it's almost always a configuration problem and not a software problem. Unfortunately, there isn't alot of configuration you can do on your end except to make sure your modems are setup correctly and try different MTU's to see if they help.
