The problem seems to have been caused by the sendmail (8.7.3) that I compiled and installed in place of the original 8.6.whatever. I noticed that several error messages immediately before the crashes mentioned a sendmail problem (not always the same problem...), so I put the old sendmail back and the thing hasn't so much as burped for four days. I'll recompile sendmail and (maybe more importantly) create a new sendmail.cf rather than adapting one from another machine... Thanks again. -Ted Zateslo
