Have a look at the "Installing and Operating 4.4BSD" paper in /usr/share/doc/smm/01.setup/. Note that this deals with 4.4BSD, not NetBSD, but it's broadly relevant. Some of the other stuff in /usr/share/doc/smm may be useful too. Recompiling the kernel: - go into /sys/arch/<arch>/conf, copy one of the existing kernel config files (usually with UPPERCASE filenames) to a new name and edit it to taste. - run "config <my-config-file>" - do "cd ../compile/<my-config-file>" and then "make depend" - do "make" - wait a while... - copy "netbsd" to the root directory, saving the old kernel if desired. Configuring for the Internet (or any full-time TCP/IP network): - Setup your IP address and network interfaces: edit /etc/myname (like /etc/hostname* on other systems), /etc/hostname.<interface-name> (see /etc/netstart comments for format). - Setup general IP stuff: edit /etc/hosts, /etc/networks, /etc/mygate (default router) if necessary. - Setup DNS if desired: edit /etc/resolv.conf - see resolv.conf(5) manpage. - Setup network services: edit /etc/netstart - see comments therein. - Setup mail: edit /etc/sendmail.cf if necessary. - Setup NIS if desired: edit /etc/defaultdomain, turn on NIS in /etc/netstart. - Other thing that may need configuring: network printers (/etc/printcap), amd-mounted NFS filesystems (/etc/amd/master), incoming FTP access (/etc/ftpusers), enable/disable specific IP services (/etc/inetd.conf) ... > What are the X windows options I have Xfree on cartridge are there any > others? I m not gonna install till I get the main NetBSD going properly. Well, there's XFree86, and there's a commercial package (XInside's Accelerated-X?) and that's about it.... -- Scott Telford, Edinburgh Parallel Computing Centre, <s.telford@ed.ac.uk> University of Edinburgh, Mayfield Rd, Edinburgh, EH9 3JZ, UK.(+44 131 650 5978) "Is it a virus, a drug, or a religion?"
