If you take the case off your machine when this happens and look at the Adaptec controller, you'll notice that the red LED on the card is solid red. This means that your card has hung due to too much traffic. The ONLY work-around is to buy another card. I currently have 3 1540's and 1 2940W ( which I can't use due to a problem with the BSD drivers ), to drive all the SCSI devices attached to my Primary Server. I'm not sure if it's a problem with the drivers or the card, but if you put, say two 1 Gb Drives, on the same 1540 and attempt to do large transfers between the two, it'll kill the card, every time...
