SOS Fellows,

I cannot get through FreeBSD 2.1 installation process (I'm using the
official Walnut Creek CD-ROM software):

My 16MB 486DX2-66 PC has a Tseng 4000 based video card (VL-bus).

During the inital stages, the PC console is normal. However, when the
installation starts copying files from the DOS partition into the
FreeBSD area the console starts behaving real strange:

Though the HD is rattling the progress console display , Alt-F1, is
non moving. The same applies to the command console, Alt-F2. Only when
I switch between these two consoles I get an up-to-date snapshot of
each console.

When the installation program asks me, the Novice, to answer a few
questions my keystrokes are not echoed. Only by moving to Alt-F2 and
back to Alt-F1 I can see my answers echoed.

I disabled all the non-essential kernel devices. Tried almost
everythimg, I guess.

Any clue?

Assuming the console driver has a bug. Can I use an external RS-232
driven console to get things up and running?

Please email your answer too: wexler@inter.net.il

Sincerely, Enoch.
