I had a hell of a weekend installing and reinstalling things, going
through the dissappearence of files[1] (on MSDOS and non-MSDOS
partitions), etc, until I noticed deep in the CMOS smth like "Large
disk access: DOS/Other". Switching it to "Other" apparently solved
the problems...

[1] At one point, kernel got lost by the end of install, and I read
the witty sarcastic message about "Hard time getting system to
boot". He! I had another kernel on the other hard-drive ;) !
