The problems that I face are due to the wrong standard Xconfig provided. The standard distribution Xconfig should be as shown below, which is what I use. I do not use fancy monitor, and I modify the Xconfig to use manual selections rather than to rely on automatic test. Earlier problems are in the clocks which do not match the modes, and the automatic selection of the last matchable mode. Because the last matchable modes are always the higherst frequency, beyong the ability of my monitor, strange results occur. The clocks need not be accurate. I readjust the values from those reported by startx >& error to match the VESA monitor settings. The higher frequencies are commented out. My system is a 386 25Mhz with no cache, 8 Mbyte RAM, mousesystem 3 button mouse, 200Mbyte conner IDE hard disk. My partions are approximately: 32 Mbyte 16bit DOS, 100 Mbyte extended DOS, 64 Mbyte 386BSD 0.1 I use standard install provided by dist.fs I install only bindist and kermit from etcdist. The cat1 manuals from XFree86 cannot be installed because of lack of diskspace. Below is the disk utilization: Filesystem 512-blks used avail capacity Mounted on /dev/wd0a 112254 109368 -8340 108% / 51838 XFree86 2 disk.sz 1106 etcdist 1754 sys.386bsd This X terminal is very fast, faster than Sun Sparc, even IPX as far as graphic response in concerned. I can have 3 modes, which determine the size of the display, instantaneously. This is much better than Windows 3.1. Info can be found in man X386, look for entry clocks by using more search "/" command. I hope the beginners will have less problem. Now my problem is how to use this X-window. The xterm is too small. How do I adjust its size. # $Header: /home/x_cvs/mit/server/ddx/x386/Xconfig,v 1.14 1992/09/12 07:03:09 dawes Exp $ # $XConsortium: Xconfig,v 1.2 91/08/26 14:34:55 gildea Exp $ # # Copyright 1990,91 by Thomas Roell, Dinkelscherben, Germany. # # Permission to use, copy, modify, distribute, and sell this software and its # documentation for any purpose is hereby granted without fee, provided that # the above copyright notice appear in all copies and that both that # copyright notice and this permission notice appear in supporting # documentation, and that the name of Thomas Roell not be used in # advertising or publicity pertaining to distribution of the software without # specific, written prior permission.
