Ok, I'm pretty well confused on this one. What I want is a serial
console- where I can hang a terminal or a modem of of a serial port and
receive console i/o.

I tried kernels with the COMCONSOLE=0, with and without the
COMCNADDR="0x3f8", options set, for both serial ports, to no avail.
Yes, the console output is redirected, but my laptop-running-kermit
terminal doesn't see a thing. Same thing if I try to have a getty
listening on /dev/tty00 or /dev/tty01- the getty process is running,
but I can't see anything from the terminal.

Ok, so the serial ports perhaps aren't working? Nope, I can hang a
modem off of either one and dial out (as I am doing now). Ok, so my
terminal doesn't work. Nope, I can hang the modem off of that and it
flies just fine. Parity? I have both ports set to none. I don't know.

I have done this trick long ago on an old sun, yet it seems to me
that there is something fundamental that I am missing, perhaps
perculiar to bsdi. If you can help me figure this out, and find
yourself in Milwaukee, I'l buy you a beer.

Thanks,
