If I remember correctly, it was a generic bug in the sequencer code used by all of the Adaptec boards. Email to gibbs@FreeBSD.org would give you the for sure answer, but I'm almost positive it's a known bug in 2.1R that's now fixed in -stable. At least get the -stable kernel sources and usr.sbin/config sources (note that the kernel configuration file format has changed *slightly* now) and build a new kernel to see if it helps.
