I personally like 4mm DAT for backups.  2gig drives are about $500-600
and DDS-2 4-8gig drives are $800-1000.  If you're going to do lots of
backups, you also can't beat the media cost for DAT (about $7 for 90m
tapes).  They're also reasonably fast, though not as fast as 8mm
Exabytes.  Last I checked, you could get an Exabyte for $1500-1600...
though I haven't checked prices on them recently.
