Many thanks to Jordan who had the right answer.., and to Alta Vista
for saving his posting. FAQ material here!!

Use disklabel -e to read the info from the disk itself, edit it, and
install in the appropriate places.

For reference, here's the disktab stuff that disklabel -e pulls up when
it starts:

# /dev/sd1:
type: unknown
disk:
label:
flags:
bytes/sector: 512
sectors/track: 106
tracks/cylinder: 10
sectors/cylinder: 1060
cylinders: 3940
sectors/unit: 4194304
rpm: 0
interleave: 0
trackskew: 0
cylinderskew: 0
headswitch: 0 # milliseconds
track-to-track seek: 0 # milliseconds
drivedata: 0

3 partitions:
# size offset fstype [fsize bsize bps/cpg]
  c: 4194304 0 unused 0 0 # (Cyl. 0 - 3956*)
