After the boot loader finishes with the F? keys, FreeBSD presents a Boot: prompt, then delays a few seconds before starting to actually load the kernel. When you see that "Boot:" prompt, enter "-c" and hit Enter. When presentted with the next option prompt, enter "visual". This brings up a very useful screen, from which you can enable/disable certain kernel options. In my particular situation, for instance, I have to disable SCSI scanning because it locks up this configuration, for reasons unknown. At any rate, you can play with the various configuration selections made available, and see what might work better.
